{happy 4th birthday, captain kalea}

Happy 4th Birthday to our sweet Kalea Lynn!

We started the day with some gifts from us, Grandma & Grandpa. She was tickled to get a bunch of Jake & the Neverland Pirates accessories & outfit, among a couple books & clothing. Cassidy, of course, had to help!

Then it was on to soccer practice while Mommy set up for the Jake & the Neverland Pirates Party.

Once friends arrived, it was a flurry of pirate & princess dress-up, making pirate bandanas, pizza, pirate booty & making spy glasses for the treasure hunt. Which was a bit of a crazy mess, but what party isn't, right?

We ended with singing Happy Birthday, loaded the kids up on sugary frosting & sent most of them home! :) It was a beautiful & fun day celebrating our sweet girl. It's so hard to believe that she's grown up so much into the kind, thoughtful, silly & loving big girl that she is today.

{yes...mess}

It was my birthday this weekend. Michael did a really good job at coming up with some good ideas to spend time together as a family doing things the I really like. We spent Saturday at the farmer's market then went out to eat. Sunday I sang at church, we had a lazy afternoon and then some friend's came over for dinner and cupcakes. Delicious chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter icing. Oh my. But I digress.

We had some time on Saturday afternoon and ended up playing in the garage. I don't know why we don't do it more often. It's just the right size - and flat - for bike riding & scooting scooters, it's enclosed, close the the bathroom and any other thing one might need.

After the kids had exhausted the fun of biking & scooting in the garage, they started going through the craft stuff in our craft cart. They noticed the big roll of builder's paper (I totally stole this idea from "9 Reasons Every Home Needs Butcher Paper" by Kelle at ETST). And the finger paint. Then they started to strip to their skivvies. (Don't you paint in your undies?) The fingerpainting body painting began. And by body painting, I mean they got as much on their bodies as they did on the paper.

Then Kalea looked at us with those big eyes and asked if they could paint the wall, "Just a itsy, teeny, little, tiny bit? pleeeeeease?" Who were we to say no! You should have seen the looks on their faces when we said YES! Priceless.
 And that, my friends, is how the story of how we have the best looking garage wall in the neighborhood.

{week 34}

Week 34 started at church where the I had the chance to sing with a quintet that I've sang with a few times in the past year. It's a non-stressful, fun way to participate in the service that fits with our schedule. Then we had a lazy afternoon followed by birthday dinner with friends and some delicious cupcakes. I love cupcakes.

We got busy as the work & school week started, since Cassidy was back to school already & Kalea got to meet her teachers, see her classroom and have a special morning out with Mommy. She started 3K mid-week & although not that keen on getting up in the morning, otherwise loves it. We had a special "first day of school" dinner of homemade macaroni & cheese topped with goldfish. (Get it? School of fish. Ok, maybe it was just amusing to me.) It's a little unconventional, but I highly suggest it. The kids were super excited. Cade decided to make the transition to the booster seat since adding one more milestone sounded like a good idea to him. No more highchairs!!!

The weekend kicked off with the Pigs & Peaches festival here in Kennesaw. We're so lucky to live in a place that does so many family friendly festivals and events. We went with a group of friends and, between all of us, I think we had a thousand kids, forty-sixty strollers or wagons, multiple glow sticks and SO much fun. The girls each took a turn riding the big pink pig...if I ever figure out how to upload to YouTube again, I'll post them here! Saturday was perfect hiking weather so we went to Red Top Mountain, about 30 minutes north of our house, to picnic, play & walk a little bit. We ended the weekend at Henry's in Acworth, the kids got beads, saw a train while we ate & had an overall fantastic weekend!

{week 33}

Boy this week was well documented!! I did notice that four of twenty-eight are of the girls sleeping. I think maybe I just wanted to document them when they were peaceful. And quiet. And sweet looking. And also quiet. Did I mention quiet? LOL! We definitely have a household of talkers. Cade has joined the ranks lately and just babbles constantly with a splattering of real words and a bunch of unintelligible stuff. Michael commented the other day that Kalea may have a future in news reporting or as a town crier with the constant stream of things happening (and imaginary things she adds to the mix). He may be on to something.

We made it through the first full week of elementary school this week. Everyone was tired by the end of the week (hence all the napping pictures) but Cassidy's doing really well. She even came home with her clip on PURPLE yesterday!  The little ones & I filled up the week with playdates - a friend or two over at our house and a super fun messy MOPS playdate at a friend's house. That one inspired us to have some shaving cream fun at home later in the week and then - GASP - let them paint on the garage wall on Saturday!!! You should have seen the joy and surprise in their eyes when I gave the green light to move from the big piece of butcher paper to the wall while they finger/feet/body/hair/belly painted.

I've had a hard time lately finding the balance between parenting and letting go to let Thing 1, 2 and 3 experience things on their own. And making sure to enjoy it with them. I'd like to blame the electronics (I admit that the iPhone is a semi-permanent attachment) or "things to do" but truthfully I may just need to LET GO. (Sometimes, let's be real.) Let them make a mess. (Let them clean it up.) Let them play together and disagree, then work together to find some resolution. (Is this real? Does that really happen? Or are your kids like mine & things just escalate until there's an all out battle. Complete with battle scars?) Let them decide what the schedule is sometimes and don't force my agenda. I know all of that sounds well and good and I'll try. Remember my word of the year, SPACE? Well, as the school year begins, I'm revisiting.

Michael spoiled me on Friday, while the Cassidy was at school & Cade/Kalea were at Mom's Morning Out by taking me to the Le Creuset shop at the new outlets near our house. We picked three items to start a set of nice cookware. I'm so excited. SO excited. I also snuck in a birthday pedicure - opting for fall color because our weather here has been unseasonably cool recently. I don't mind so much, but I would like to get a little use out of the pool this month before it closes for the season!

We spent Saturday morning exploring the Dekalb Farmers Market getting yummy veggies and fruit, then splurging on some delicious cheese, bread, hummus and tabbouleh for an at home date night.  Then we headed to my old stomping grounds, Apres Diem, for lunch. Quite a different experience from a decade ago when I worked there, but fun none the less. What a yummy birthday weekend!

{one}

Hard to believe but our baby boy is one! He's our sunshine, smiling babe who makes our family complete. At 22 lbs, he's growing & thriving, crawling & cruising, playing & chasing the cats & his ball. He eats like its going out of style & constantly thinks he's just one of the big kids while watching his sisters. What a joy!

{pirates & princesses birthday}

Cassidy decided that her party this year would be about pirates & princesses - two things that she & Kalea play all.the.time. We have the dress up bins to prove it. I knew we would be cutting it close as far as baby goes since my due date was 9 days later but we like to live on the edge, right? Invitations went out, RSVPs for preschool friends and family near and far came back & I started ordering decorations and doing as much early preparation as I could. Well it was a good thing; brother came early. She only turns four once though, so who was I to postpone such an important event...8 days after her brother was born! I'm fortunate that my wonderful parents were in for the weekend, I have a husband who likes to entertain & in-laws who bring food!
The hit of the afternoon was the treasure hunt, complete with map - courtesy of Grandma Betty. We raced around the house & yard searching for telescopes, eye patches, jewels, tattoos & assorted other pirate loot. The kids had a blast!
Happy 4th Birthday to my pirate princess, Cassidy. We love you....aaaarrrggggh!

{cade milton}

Cade Milton was born on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 10:47 a.m. weighing 7 lb 13 oz. & 19.5" long.
At 37 weeks and some odd days, in the wee hours of the morning I woke up feeling a little strange & made the requisite pregnant middle of the night trip to the bathroom. Strangely I was bleeding which was both unusual & alarming. After convincing Michael to wake up we decided to call the midwife on call to figure out what to do. At that point I wasn't have regular or painful contractions but the blood had me on edge. She called back after a while & wanted me to go to Labor & Delivery. I asked if I could wait until normal office hours - after figuring out what to do with the girls since that hadn't been planned yet! - but she was worried that morning traffic might be a problem if by that point I was in serious active labor.

After a quick shower Michael called Diana, my wonderful friend who came to save us in the middle of the night, to come to the house to be with the girls & then take them to Miss Robin's house to spend the day. I called my parents & texted my sisters to let them know we were heading into hospital. I still wasn't completely convinced that I was in labor though since neither of my other labors began anything like this. Michael finished getting the last minute things for the hospital ready I hopped in the shower. While I was showering the contractions began to pick up a little - being more painful & coming closer together. Diana arrived as I got dressed. I came downstairs, made a list of important phone numbers & the girls' schedule and tried to eat something while I talked to her for a few minutes. Apparently this was pretty amusing because I'd be chatting along like a normal person & then just gasp (contraction!) then continue on as if nothing was out of the ordinary! Eh, third time, no problem, right?

We left for the hospital somewhere around 5:30 am. And stopped for gas on the way to the hospital. Yes, again Michael's car didn't have gas. At least I didn't have to pump it myself through contractions! We parked in the deck & walked inside together. I checked in to triage & they checked me out. Yep, pregnant! Yep, in labor & at 6 cm! It was a very different experience than at IMC in Salt Lake. There I went directly to the room where I delivered & my midwife came quite quickly & stayed with me for nearly the whole process. Here I was in a triage room for what seemed like a really long time & only saw L&D nurses who, while very nice, weren't my midwife. They also insisted that I get a hep lock in case I would need IV fluids or antibiotics during or after labor/delivery. That I was not happy about, but honestly figured it wasn't worth fighting and I just wanted to get to my real room.

Once there - no idea how long it actually took - one of the midwives arrived. I was checked again & had dilated a little further. She left to check on some other patients & I was taken care of by the most wonderful labor & delivery nurse. She got me juice & made sure I was comfortable. Michael got out the baby names book & started reading me names. We had just started seriously talking about baby names the week prior & were no where near close to a decision. Between contractions he called out a gazillion names & I shot most of them down or gave him dirty looks. I don't think I was on my best game for name deciding at the time. By about 10:30 am I was in pretty constant pain with contractions coming right on top of each other. Our wonderful nurse checked me & said that she was next to sure that if the midwife would break my water baby would be born. My water was broken by my midwives for both Cassidy & Kalea so I knew she was probably right.

She was barely out the door to go call the midwife when SWOOSH, water breaks! From that point it was just a flurry of activity. Nurses & the midwife flew in getting gowned up as they ran, lights pointed in my face (to which I told them to turn those things off!), me puking on poor Michael (two out of three deliveries = puking right before delivery!) & someone telling me not to push. Right. As if I had any control over that. With no real pushes, just my experienced body doing what bodies do, Cade was born! I don't even think it was five minutes from when my water broke. I guess when he was ready to arrive, he was ready. Michael was the first to tell me that we had a son. A son!

project 365 photo: 09.28.2011 {birthday girl}

Our baby girl is no longer a baby - she turned 2! We started the day with special blueberry muffins & a new Sesame Street book.

Later in the day, while Cassidy was a preschool, we went to Kid to Kid to pick out a couple of (last minute!!) presents. Afterward we had a special birthday lunch with Daddy at Panera. She chowed down on chocolate milk, a PBJ, pickle & a special birthday cookie.

That evening, after a birthday dinner, big sister Cassidy & Daddy helped open a few presents that out of town friends & family had mailed, as well as those secret ones we'd bought earlier in the day! Then, of course, it was time for cake! Happy birthday beautiful girl!

And, the next day, we had her 2 year old well-child check. 34.75" tall, 24.4 lbs & meeting all her milestones. She's growing up!

project 365 photo: 07.04.2011 {is it my birfday yet?}

it's a flag. really.
One of the things about having a toddler & a preschooler that people don't tell you about is that you become an expert. At everything. And you have the answers. To everything. That's because your child or children will ask you approximately 4, 672 questions per day. And you are expected to have the answers.

And also, you have those same answers - you know, the exact same ones to the exact same questions - every.single.day at least 400 times. No kidding.

One of the questions Cassidy needs clarified on a daily basis is, "Momma, is it my birfday soon?" On the fourth of July she got a little extra excited because it was the fourth which is the same number as her birfday...only a few months off. So, even though we did get a special breakfast, she realized after looking at the calendar that there were a few more months to wait.

And then, of course, asked the same thing again ten minutes later.
